The Verulam Magistrate’s Court is expected to hand down its ruling in the bail application of 69-year-old Portuguese national Joao de Oliveira Rendeiro on Friday.

He was arrested by Interpol at Umhlanga north of Durban.

This after he fled Portugal following his conviction and sentence in a multi-million dollar fraud case.

Rendeiro was the founder of the bank Banco Privado Portugues – also known as BPP and was charged with tax fraud and money laundering.

De Oliveira Rendeiro’s lawyer Shaun Kelly has told the court that his client intends challenging two warrants of arrest from his country and South Africa.

Kelly told the court that his client does not want to go back to Portugal, where he is implicated in the collapse of BPP.

Kelly says De Oliveira Rendeiro intends challenging his conviction and sentence while staying in South Africa.

The court further heard that De Oliveira Rendeiro was found in possession of three passports.

State prosecutor Deneshree Naicker said De Oliveira Rendeiro is a flight risk because he has no ties in South Africa.
