Bafana U23’s set up exciting COSAFA plate final with Malawi

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Bafana Bafana B-team has achieved its objective of playing three matches at the COSAFA tournament following a 4-2 win on penalties over Uganda at the Princess Magogo Stadium.

Playing in the first COSAFA plate semi-final, the Ugandan Cranes drew first blood at the beginning of the second-half through Dan Serunkuma.

Portuguese based attacker Luther Singh responded for the hosts in the 72nd minutes, his second goal in as many games in this tournament.

Mondli Mpoto saved two penalties to help his team proceed to the Plate Final against Malawi to be played at the Moses Mabhida stadium on Friday evening. Head coach David Notoane is happy with the extra game time his charges will be getting.

This match gave Notoane the much needed test against opponents from outside the COSAFA region and it prepares them well for possibly the AFCON U23 championships where they could be headed should they beat Zimbabwe in the final qualifiers in September. Uganda coach Abdallah Mubiru says despite the loss they gave the crowd a good game.

Bafana will be tested in the Plate Final as they will come up against the free scoring Malawian team after the Flames beat Comoros 2-1 in the second semi-final played at the same venue .

Notoane made six changes to his starting line-up as he gave more players a chance to start in the game.

On Friday he will go back to his strongest starting line-up having given almost all the players in the camp some game time. – Report by Velile Mnyandu
