The stepfather of Baby Daniel has been found guilty of murder while the mother has been found guilty of child abuse and negligence. Judge Joseph Matshitse has detailed the gruesome torture that Baby Daniel suffered during his short life.
The toddler’s mother, Mary Vermaak and her partner, Timothy Naidoo, are facing charges of abuse and neglect. This after the child fell into a tub of hot water and sustained burns to 60% of his body. He also had a broken arm and leg from two previous incidents.
Prosecutor Steven Rubin, who was gunning for a murder conviction, has argued that the caregivers failed to explain some of the bruises found on the toddler’s body.
Judge Matshitse announced a break after the mother of the toddler broke down.
