The toddler was allegedly being used as a shield to prevent authorities from leveling the father's township shack.

The Metro police officer who caught an infant that was flung from the roof of a shack by her father says he acted naturally when the incident happened.

Constable Luyolo Nojulumba is being hailed a hero.

Police were trying to stop the demolition of the suspect’s house in the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Port Elizabeth.

The suspect has been charged with child abuse and appeared in court on Monday. Nojulumba says the baby is in the hands of social workers and is safe.

“She’s with social workers for alternative care. The man was throwing the baby down, but I managed to go and catch the baby and after that the baby just stopped crying that time.”
