Babalwa Lobishe elected as chairperson of the ANC’s Nelson Mandela region

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The African National Congress Nelson Mandela region finally has a chairperson again after the region was under the stewardship of a regional task team since 2018.

Babalwa Lobishe was elected to the position uncontested after Andile Lungisa declined the nomination for the position. The deputy chairperson position is taken by Siphiwo Tshaka.

The current mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, Eugene Johnson is the new deputy secretary.

Former ANC youth league deputy president, Lungisa, says it is time for him to pass the baton on to a younger generation of leaders in the Nelson Mandela region. He says he will now focus on contesting provincially next year.

“We have to usher the new youngsters to take over the region. You must remember I must not leave the region through chairs, I must leave while I’m being loved by everybody in the region with the full support, which I still have, which I still enjoy. You must remember I was elected in the REC more than three times, the last conference I was the chairperson. Now we had to make sure that all the comrades come to the conference so they can be elected so that we can hand over the baton.”

Political analyst Dr Ntsikelelo Breakfast says the outcome of the Nelson Mandela regional conference of the ANC in the Eastern Cape is a nod to party President Cyril Ramaphosa and those who support him.

Breakfast says the election result in the region points to likely events in the future.

“I think the electoral outcomes of the regional conference of  ANC  are a victory for the Ramaphosa faction because the chairlady is aligned to the PEC and also the person who was ascended to the position of the secretary of the region. So that gives us a clear picture of what is likely to happen at the provincial level at the next conference. And also the faction of Ramaphosa has also been consolidated by the outcome of the OR regional conference as well.”
