Authorities have warned that the death toll for Gauteng’s roads this festive season could be double that of the same time period last year.

Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane revealed on Wednesday that the death toll since the start of the festive season has already surpassed the total number of road users killed in the 2016/2017 festive season.

Nkosi-Malobane called this a crisis. “We’ve got more people who have died before Christmas than last year, meaning this year, end of January. So it means we are faced with a serious challenge. We might double the number or triple the number. Fifty nine pedestrians have died. About 10% of the overall number at the moment is children younger than five years old. Fifty nine is mostly people who are drinking and walking so this is the kind of the crisis we are having in this province.”
