Gigaba returns to State Capture Commission
31 May 2021, 4:00 AM

Former Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba, will continue with his Gupta-related evidence at the State Capture Commission on Monday.

The commission is investigating allegations of State Capture, Corruption and Fraud in the Public Sector including Organs of State.

Last week, Gigaba disputed allegations made by his estranged wife Nomachule that he had business dealings with the Gupta brothers.

Gigaba recalled going several times to the Gupta-owned Sahara Computers offices in Johannesburg to pick up invitations.

He insisted that he only had social and cultural interactions with the Guptas and not business dealings.

Gigaba told Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo that he continued interacting with the Guptas even after he was appointed minister.

The commission hears Gupta-related evidence from Malusi Gigaba:

The commission was supposed to hear President Cyril Ramaphosa’s evidence on Monday but that appearance has since been shelved.

At his next appearance – Ramaphosa is expected to give testimony for his tenure when he was the deputy president of South Africa and as the Head of State. He is also expected to make closing remarks.

Venus Williams, Coco Gauff pair up to play doubles at French Open
30 May 2021, 9:42 PM

Venus Williams will team up with teenager Coco Gauff – less than half her age – for a tilt at the French Open doubles title, with the American duo set to take on 13th seeds Ellen Perez and Zheng Saisai in the opening round on Wednesday.

Gauff, 17, burst onto the scene in 2019 when she knocked out her idol Williams in the opening round at Wimbledon before claiming another upset win over the 40-year-old, seven-time Grand Slam champion at last year’s Australian Open.

Williams has previously won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, all with her younger sister Serena who is chasing a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title in Paris.

Gauff has won three doubles titles in her career to add to her two singles crowns.

The pair are also in singles action with Gauff scheduled to take on Aleksandra Krunic in the first round on Tuesday while Williams faces 32nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Gunmen kill two, wound 20 outside Florida concert
30 May 2021, 8:32 PM

Assailants opened fire on a crowd outside a concert in Florida early on Sunday, killing two people and wounding more than 20, police and media reports said.

Three people got out of a white SUV and fired assault-style weapons and handguns at revelers gathered for an album launch party at the El Mula Banquet Hall near Hialeah, a city in Miami-Dade county, according to local media.

“I am at the scene of another targeted and cowardly act of gun violence,” Miami-Dade police director Alfredo Ramirez wrote on Twitter. “These are cold blooded murderers that shot indiscriminately into a crowd and we will seek justice.”

The Miami Herald said 20 wounded victims were taken to local hospitals, and posted a photo of friends and relatives holding hands in prayer outside one trauma center. CBS4 Miami said at least one victim remained in critical condition, and that police had no one in custody as of midday Sunday.

Angelica Green, of Miramar, told reporters her son and nephew, both 24, were arriving at the event when they became among those shot and wounded. She said they were both now instable condition at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital.

She told Local 10 News her son had telephoned her “frantic, saying he had been shot, that it hurts and that he loves us”.

“He said the guys came with ski masks and hoodies, and just started shooting up the crowd,” Green said.

Florida Governor Ron De Santis said state authorities were working to catch the perpetrators.

“Justice needs to be swift & severe!” he wrote on Twitter.

The United States saw at least 200 mass shootings in the first 132 days of this year, according to a report by the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group.
