Soweto artist pays tribute to Madikizela-Mandela
10 April 2018, 4:20 PM

A Soweto artist paid tribute to the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela by painting her picture using smoke from a burning candle.

Anathi Nkanyuza says this is a celebration of Mama Winnie’s life.

Creating art and using technology to assist, Anathi uses flames to leave scorch marks on canvas.

He captures and studies photographs to refine his work, then uses an eraser to remove the scorch marks and creating a piece of art.

His latest project is the canvas of the late Mother of the Nation, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

“The late Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela picture is to commemorate her and celebration of her life as well.”

Quite nervous when he started his new project, Nkanyuza relied on Mam Winnie’s popularity to assist.

“I was quite nervous about it at first since it’s my first time drawing Mama Winnie, but she’s quite like a recognizable face. So, it wasn’t much of a challenge. It’s a popular person. So, I’ve seen her face quite a number of times.”

The artist says Mama Winnie was very inspirational and touched many lives.

“The reason why I created it actually, like is just in commemoration of her life and all the work that she’s done for the country, in fighting for our freedom, the freedom that we have now as the youth of South Africa.”

The late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will be laid to rest on Saturday.

Ramaphosa praises Madikizela-Mandela as a true leader
10 April 2018, 3:31 PM

President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised late stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela as a true leader who sacrificed her life for the benefit of others.

He was addressing the Madikizela family and residents of Mbhongweni village, the birth place of Madikizela-Mandela outside Mbizana in the Eastern Cape.

Ramaphosa says Madikizela-Mandela endured so much pain for the country to be free.

“We recognise the role and a contribution that Mama Winnie made. Not only to the people of this country but to the struggle to get all of us to be free. Mama Winnie gave a huge contribution, but in that contribution she suffered a great deal. It is difficult to even imagine the suffering that she went through.”

Meanwhile, Chinese ambassador to South Africa Ling Songtian says Madikizala-Mandela’s commitment to justice has inspired the world to forge a better life for the poorest of the poor.

He was among the over 70 ambassadors and Heads of Missions that visited the Mandela home in Orlando West, Soweto Tuesday afternoon. The diplomats were paying their respects.

Machel pleaded with South Africans, who she says are usually harsh, to understand that Zinzi and Zenani have lost the only parent they knew for most of their lives.

Graca Machel says: “Don’t you think it would have been great for her to have all the untruths which were allowed to live with us about her to be cleared while still amongst us, don’t you think it would be good for mama to hear from all races just to say how unique she is in our history.”
