Large number of officials deployed at Lesotho border posts

Free State police say there will be a large number of officials deployed at various Lesotho border posts to maintain law and order.

Basotho nationals will be returning to South Africa for work and re-opening of schools next week.

Police deployed include new recruits who completed their training last month.

A large number of police officers will be deployed at various Border Gates.  This includes Peka, Maputsoe, Caledonspoort and Maseru.

These ports of entry are known to be used as gateways by car hijackers who cross into Lesotho.

Former ANC councillors in the F State attempt to prevent By-elections

The 17 African National Congress (ANC’s) Maluti a Phofung Municipality councillors in the Free State, whom the party expelled last month, say they will approach the High Court to prevent By-elections taking place in the area.

The party’s provincial executive committee axed the councillors, who include the municipality’s executive mayor, following recommendations by the party’s National Disciplinary Committee.

They are accused of misconduct.

The councillor’s spokesperson, Paratlane Motloung elaborates,“We are approaching the High Court to interdict the IEC and the municipality from going ahead with the By-elections since the councillors are appealing the decision of the NDC of the ANC.”

Police intensify search for nine-year old boy in Durban beach

Police have intensified their search for the body of a nine-year old boy who went missing on New Year’s Day at the Durban North Beach.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele says it is believed the boy who was swimming alongside the Pier was dragged out by rip current.

She says all rescue teams are all out to search for the boy.

“The body of a boy who drowned on Tuesday and went missing is still not has been found in North Beach. The search by the Search and Rescue Team is still on going and police so far has received negative results.”

Police have zero tolerance for illegal liquor traders

West Rand police will have a zero tolerance police for shebeen owners trading in liquor without the appropriate licenses.

This according to the police’s Carmen Hendricks, who says two suspects have been arrested in two separate incidents in as many days and nearly 100 litres of alcohol was confiscated from one property where it was being sold illegally.

“Upon their arrival at two different addresses at OR Tambo and Siyahlala squatter camps, they found liquor at the premises and not one of the owners, one female and one male, had liquor licenses to produce. Different alcohol was confiscated and taken to Randfontein police station and handed in to the SAP 13 storeroom. No one will be tolerated if found selling liquor without a license. Liquor abuse is a choice. It affects everyone.”

Suspects arrested for gang-related murders in Westbury

Police believe the two men arrested for two gang-related murders in Westbury on Friday could be linked to other crimes and killings in the area.

The two men, aged 23 and 26, have been arrested for two counts of murder, for their alleged involvement in a shooting that left one person dead at a funeral in June last year.

The police’s Kay Makhubela says the men have also been charged with a second murder after one person died in hospital following a shooting in the area on the 15th of December.

“Police followed the leads up until Friday when they got their whereabouts in Westbury. So they will be appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s court facing charges of murder. The police management applaud the police who work tirelessly to chase and to arrest the suspects. We are going to continue and make sure that the community of Westbury are living in peace.”
