Esteemed Afrikaans writers and authors have gathered in Pniel in the Cape Winelands for the 2018 Adam Small Literary Festival. The renowned writer and activist died in 2016 at the age of 79.

He was the recipient of the coveted Hertzog Prize in 2012 for his lifetime contribution to Afrikaans literature. Small was one of the most prolific non-white Afrikaans writers in South Africa. He spent his life using the written word to oppose the injustices of apartheid.

“We aim to honour Adam Small to celebrate his works, you know many times great writers become literary cliché, you know they are writers they are poets etc, but not actually know their work, that is what we want to do with this festival, we want to get people over here who talk about his work, we don’t even have a biography of Adam Small,” says Festival organiser Professor Darryl David.
