Australia destroy Proteas in first T20

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Proteas have suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Australia in the first T20 that was played at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

The Australians set a formidable 197 target for the Proteas, who were bowled for a meager 89 runs in the 14th over.

Steve Smith, who was disgraced by a ball-tampering scandal the last time the Aussies toured South Africa, made a formidable 45 from 32 balls. Captain Aaron Finch slaughtered the local bowlers with a quickfire 42 from just 27 balls.

The Proteas were never in the hunt in their run chase, losing wickets from the first over. Faf Du Plessis top-scored with 24, followed by fast bowler Kagiso Rabada scoring 22.

With the T20 World Cup scheduled for later this year, the Proteas think-tank will be worried about the team’s dismal performance.
