The Auditor-General has expressed concern over audit regressions in the Free State. This was the result of poor compliance with laws and regulations.

Over the past four years irregular expenditure in the province has increased to over R9 billion. The AG has blamed authorities for failing to investigate acts of financial misconduct.

The AG’s office has also decried the inability to manage finances.

Health contributed more than R3 billion of irregular expenditure. Human Settlements and Education were also fingered.

Irregular expenditure in the Free State has increased from R2 billion to over R5 billion.

The office of the premier and the department of agriculture did not disclose their irregular expenditure of almost R1 billion in the past financial year.

The two departments were raided by the Asset Forfeiture Unit and the Hawks. The raid related to the R220 million corruption investigation of the Estina dairy project in Vrede.

The AG has also bemoaned non-compliance on supply chain management regulations.

Competitive bids are often not invited which ultimately result in fruitless and irregular expenditure.
