Athletes in Mandela Marathon close to the 45 km mark

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Athletes participating in the 100 kilometre Mandela Marathon are close to the 45 kilometre mark. Many of them have vowed to finish the gruelling race that started in Clakebury early on Sunday and will end at Mandela’s ancestral home of Mvezo.

The significance of this race is that it goes through all historical places of Madiba’s upbringing before becoming a world icon.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of the Nelson Mandela Museum, Bonke Tyhulu has urged government to improve the road infrastructure in the province.

“ If you talk of freedom and Mandela’s centenary one has to look at how have we gone in terms of providing the infrastructure, obviously we still have those challenges while this is not our duty as the museum. We continue to engage with different stakeholders to improve services here, it is a problem. Everybody has to agree with that and appreciate that. Through our engagements with different stakeholders we facilitate discussions to say, something must happen, there has to be infrastructure, roads have to be improved, clinics and education has to improve, that would be the real freedom for the people of Madiba.” Click below  for more on the story:
