Athletes exile themselves on Robben Island

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Two endurance athletes have exiled themselves for 27 days on Robben Island to mark Mandela Day.

They started a grueling challenge to raise funds for underprivileged children. It will end on the eve of Madiba’s 100th birthday next month.

Athletes Grant Jansen and Mthetheleli Myaka will push their bodies to the limit by running and cycling over 4500 kilometres while on the island.

Jansen says they’re up to the challenge, “Madiba was never going to live forever, but his legacy lives forever and the baton has been handed over to us and we are just normal people trying to make a difference in the lives of people, especially those who are in need.”
