The department confirmed that although the number of unplaced pupils had dropped dramatically from 3,366 recently, there still remained 690 unplaced learners.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) said on Tuesday that the number of unplaced learners at schools stood at just under 700.

On Monday, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi had tweeted that only 250 learners still needed to be placed and that these would be done by the end of February.

However, on Tuesday, the department confirmed that although the number of unplaced pupils had dropped dramatically from 3 366 recently, but there still remained 690 unplaced learners.

Before the 2018 academic year resumed in January, the GDE said there were over 32000 learners who needed to be placed at schools in the province.

“The department remains committed in meeting its constitutional obligation, by placing all unplaced learners,” GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said.
