The Electoral Commission (IEC) says applications for special votes will open on the 21st of September, allowing those who are unable to present themselves at their voting stations on election day to apply.
These include people with physical limitations, illnesses, disabilities, or other circumstances that may prevent them from voting in person.
The commission says the application period will close on 12 October.
Local government elections will be held on the 4th of November.
IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya briefed the media in Centurion earlier Friday.
“Voters applying for special votes must indicate whether they must be visited in their homes or places of care, or at the voting station of registration on 2 or 3 November 2026. Special votes are an important feature of our electoral scheme because they ensure that eligible voters in special circumstances are not excluded from participating in the electoral process.”
Meanwhile, the IEC says over 2.1 million voters have been added to national voters’ roll since 2024 general elections.
Citizens have until midnight Friday to register to vote on the IEC’s online platform before the voters’ roll officially closes.
