APC intends to build party membership

The African People’s Convention (APC) in Mpumalanga is working towards growing its membership ahead of the 2019 general elections. This was one of the resolutions taken during its Provincial General Council held in Mbombela on Saturday.

The party indicated that it wants to have representation in all wards of various municipalities to enable it to have seats in the provincial legislature. APC is a break-away political party from the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) and is still struggling to attain a single seat in the Mpumalanga Legislature.

Central to the APC Mpumalanga’s General Council was the issue of membership growth. The party has now adopted Saturdays as “APC day” where it conducts door to door visits to attract and register new members across the province. Some of the current members believe the party has potential to grow stronger.

The Provincial General Council has also managed to elect a provincial Women’s League leadership. The Women’s wing is expected to unite women in various sectors in different communities.

The Provincial Chairperson Freddy Mbhadze says for the past six months the organisation has shown growth although they still have a lot of work ahead of the 2019 elections.

“As the province, we are really convinced that the APC is going to add value in the legislature, national and even at municipal level going to ward level because we are having competent cadres. We have been through the cadre-ship development, through the year going forward to 2018/19 that would be our campaign all the way so that we can able to assist our communities .”

The party indicates that the programme to attract new members is running very smoothly, despite in two municipalities, Victor Khanye and Emalahleni, where it is still struggling to set up branches.

National APC chairperson Leonard Hlathi says each province has a set up target it needs to reach before 2019.

“We don’t want to make any mistake to take changes to 2018 without having reached the target of 52 000 that we have set for Mpumalanga to get before June 2018. In Victor Khanye we just have individuals like in Emalahleni, we don’t have functional sub-regions- we are here to check whether we are in line with that.”

The APC says it is also concerned about the social ills facing the country and it believes free education and job creation are some solutions to the country’s problems.
