The African People’s Convention (APC) says it is disappointed that the South African government is trying to downplay commemorations of the late Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) leader Robert Sobukwe, who died this month – 40 years ago.

On Sunday, PAC will be resuming with its planned celebrations in remembering Sobukwe, in Molorwe village outside Rustenburg in the North West.

Sobukwe died on February 27, 1978 from lung complications at Kimberley General Hospital where he was banished by the apartheid regime.

In its statement the PAC says it will make sure that Sobukwe’s name never dies.

On the other hand, the APC leader Themba Godi who is a former PAC member says it will continue, in various provinces, to conduct Robert Sobukwe memorial lectures to ensure that his teachings live forever.
