Angry residents at Dalton Hostel go on the rampage in Durban CBD

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Residents of Dalton Hostel in Umbilo in Durban have gone on the rampage, in what appears to be post-election violence.

Roads in the area have been cordoned off by law enforcement agencies.

The residents are angry as they were allegedly unable to cast their votes on Monday.

Parts of the eThekwini College nearby, which was one of the voting stations, has been set alight including one vehicle.

SABC News reporter Ayanda Mhlongo says the situation remains tense. Mhlongo says that police officials have come out in their numbers to try and control the situation.

Hung councils in KZN

As a number of municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal do not have outright winners, some voters in Durban believe it will be a good thing to have multiple parties working together to co-govern hung councils.

There are 18 hung councils in KZN.

The IEC in the province earlier announced that the preliminary results in Durban indicate that the ANC has lost its outright majority in the eThekwini Metro.
