The ANC Youth League says it is hopeful that Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will answer the call to take over the leadership of the ruling party. The league today released its official list of preferred nominees for the top six. The ANC Youth League is the first voting bloc to nominate Motlanthe for president. It wants Tokyo Sexwale or Mathews Phosa as deputy president. Fikile Mbalula is earmarked for the Secretary General post. The league wants to retain Thandi Modise as deputy secretary general.Paul Mashatile and Thenjiwe Mthintso are also on the list.
The league will have 45 delegates at the Mangaung elective conference. ANC youth league deputy president Ronald Lamola says: “ANC needs a new generation of leaders with fresh thinking, creativity, innovation. Kgalema will fulfill that role.”

In contrast, KwaZulu Natal says it wants a continuity of leadership. The province is a stronghold of President Jacob Zuma. It will send the biggest delegation almost 1 000 delegates. “In terms of leadership, the view is that we have continuity, people who understand the programme that has been implemented from Polokwane. It doesn’t mean that we are saying one leader must be elected, by the way when we speak of leadership we would have loved to see continuity in terms of the NEC.” Nominations close on November 26.
