Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality's first council meeting, November 4, 2021.

The council of the hung Modimolle–Mookgophong Local Municipality in Limpopo has elected African National Congress (ANC) councillor, Sinah Langa as the new Speaker.

She obtained 15 votes to beat the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Dingaan Motshwene who got 13 votes.

The sitting to elect the office bearers collapsed on two occasions after the voting for nominees of the speaker position ended in a stalemate.

Both the ANC and the other parties combined won 14 seats during this month’s local government elections.

Last week, the presiding officer of Modimolle-Mookgophong council sought advice on the election of office-bearers

Meanwhile, the ANC and DA have gone into a coalition at some of the 10 hung councils in the Northern Cape.

By the past weekend, the ANC had taken control of seven hung councils, with the help of civic movements.

The DA has a deal with the Namakwa Civic Movement to govern the Nama Khoi council.
