ANC W Cape wants Cape Town put under administration

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The African National Congress (ANC) in Cape Town says it will write to National Government and the Department of Cooperative Governance to place the City of Cape Town under administration.

The party says the Democratic Alliance (DA) used unconstitutional means to oust Patricia de Lille as mayor and that this must be investigated immediately.

The DA revoked De Lille’s membership citing a clause in its constitution which states that if a member declares their resignation from the party publicly, the person’s membership is automatically ceased.

De Lille says she will be challenging the decision at the High Court this Friday.

The ANC says good governance and service delivery is being hampered by the DA’s removal of De Lille in Cape Town.

ANC Western Cape secretary Faiez Jacobs said, “As the ANC we view the DA’s De Lille clause as a violation of both the city council independence and the executive mandate of elected officials as elected by the people of the City of Cape Town…”

“The ANC supports constitutionality the rule of law and good governance. We have received reports of intimidation tactics by the DA on its councilors who have voted against these unconstitutional tactics on the mayor. The ANC is prepared to petition national government through the department of local government and cooperative affairs to put the City of Cape Town under administration,” added Jacobs.
