ANC top six nominations delayed

Reading Time: 2 minutes

ANC head of policy, Jeff Radebe says the party has not yet reached the stage for nominations. Nominations for the ANC’s top six officials are expected to take place today at the party’s 53rd national conference in Mangaung. Delegates will also continue with credentials.
The ANC adjourned the conference at around midnight last night after it decided to put the discussion of credentials on hold. President Jacob Zuma delivered his presidential report yesterday, while secretary general Gwade Mantshe gave his organisational report and the party’s treasurer general, Mathews Phosa, delivered his report too.
The conference, which was expected to start at 8:30 yesterday morning, was delayed for about four hours.
Meanwhile, the ANC’s spokesperson Jackson Mthembu says the ANC has not received any information about the letter of demand that was allegedly sent to the secretary general, implying that a disgruntled ANC Free State member may take the party to court.
Mthembu says even if they had been aware of it, it would not stop the conference from continuing. Such talk follows reports that the party could find itself back in court as disgruntled members in the North West and Free State are considering interdicting the conference.
“If there are some people for whatever reason who think that they have to go court, we will cross that bridge when we get there. From where I am seated, I am with the secretary general almost all the time. I am a member of the starring committee, I am not aware of us having a received anything,” says Mthembu.
The party’s conference at the University of the Free State started yesterday and will end on Thursday.
