ANC to push forward with a social media policy

The African National Congress says the adoption of the envisaged social media policy will ensure that party leaders do not use the platform to attack and embarrass the ruling party.

Prominent ANC leaders have taken to social media to denounce party positions on certain issues like the alleged state capture, Nkandla security upgrades and whether or not should parliamentarians use a secret vote to unseat President Jacob Zuma.

Briefing the media in Johannesburg, ANC National Executive Committee member Hope Papo says the new social media policy will ensure that members adhere to the party’s code of conduct.

“There are times for internal debates in any political party. A social media policy will help guide structures of the ANC to ensure that the debate is not slander it’s a discussion. Some of the things said in social media are not building the organisation.”
