ANC to hold special NEC meeting

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The legitimacy of the African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Executives in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Northern Cape will once again come under scrutiny during the ruling party’s Special National Executive Committee meeting which resumes in Irene outside Pretoria on Saturday.

The party’s top brass is under pressure to uphold the Pietermaritzburg High Court ruling that nullified the ANC KZN provincial party’s 2015 elective conference.

Also, a faction of the ANC in the Eastern Cape has disputed the outcomes of last month’s chaotic provincial conference and in the Northern Cape, the party’s newly elected leadership is also facing a court challenge from disgruntled members.

Jacob Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa are expected to be part of the special NEC meeting.

With only five weeks left before the staging of the much anticipated ANC leadership elective congress in mid-December, there is growing anxiety as to whether the current court challenges over the legitimacy of some of the party’s leadership structures will not lead to the postponement of the conference.

Branch delegates are currently meeting to nominate their preferred candidates to take over the leadership of the ruling party.

Political observers have described the December conference as a make or break for the ANC and an opportune moment to self-correct, as the party struggle to restore its moral authority ahead of the 2019 general elections.

President Jacob Zuma and his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa are expected to be part of the special NEC meeting, which will also discuss pressing socio-economic issues like the call for free tertiary education.
