ANC tight-lipped on final nominations

Reading Time: 2 minutes

ANC members that have been nominated to run for the top six positions of the party have until just before elections begin in Mangaung to confirm if they accept their nominations. This was announced by the ANC Electoral Commission in Johannesburg today. Candidates will only be announced once their nominations have been screened. The Commission has also said it wishes to inform the ANC’s branches about the final candidates before telling the public. The commission is made up of chairperson, MK veteran Dr Mochubela “Wezi” Seekoe, 1956 Women’s March participant Sophie de Bruin as his deputy, former Rivonia Trialist Andrew Mlangeni and Struggle veteran Getrude Shope. The Commission told journalists that it may not confirm who has accepted nomination for any of the top positions just yet as it is still consolidating the branch and provincial nominations and screening nominated candidates.
Delegates can also be nominated from the floor once the Conference begins. Electoral Commission spokesperson, Ishmael Mnisi says: “If we run an election for a certain position and because candidates were also nominated for another position – we will have to announce the outcome of that position and then going in conference to move further into the other positions – so that we can give the conference an opportunity to decide whether they want any further nominations on that next position because of the provision that exists in the Constitution”.
Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will contest President Jacob Zuma for the position of ANC leader at the Mangaung conference. ANC Treasurer general Matthew Phosa and Tokyo Sexwale have both confirmed they have accepted nominations for the position of deputy president.
