ANC still committed to transformation: Zuma

Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Jacob Zuma says the ANC remains committed to transformation.

Zuma was speaking at the 4th National General Council in Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg.

The President stressed that in order for the economic challenges that face our country to be eradicated, government has to follow the values expressed in the Freedom Charter.

“The ANC remains unwavering in its commitment to the vision expressed in the Freedom Charter to build a South Africa that is truly united. A non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous nation – these are statements and thoughts that should guide us as the ANC in our everyday activities.”

Zuma has also affirmed the power of ANC branches as opposed to its leadership.

This reminder comes amid reports of some party leaders trying to influence the succession battle ahead of 2017 when Zuma’s second term ends.

There were scenes of jubilation outside the venue as hundreds of ANC members sang liberation songs ahead of Zuma’s address.

Earlier, there was confusion surrounding whether the media will be allowed access to witness the President deliver his address.

Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni says one of the reasons behind the “privacy” is that the ANC does not want the public to witness any divisions within faction, if there are any.

“They would want as much as possible to avoid the embarrassment of an open conference where any indication of divisions within the ANC any disagreements play themselves out. They would want to seek consensus on policy issues as much as possible, but I do think that at some point they have part of this open, while most of it may be behind closed doors.”
