The memorial service of African National Congress (ANC) struggle stalwart Mendi Msimang is under way in Pretoria. Msimanga died earlier this week after suffering from cancer.

He was 89.

Mourners have gathered at the Dirco auditorium in Pretoria. This is as their pay the last respects to the struggle stalwart

“Uncle Mendi”, as he was affectionately known by most, was one of the country’s first ambassadors to the United Kingdom in 1994.

He was also instrumental in the establishment of SOMFACO the college where ANC cadres completed their high school education.  He also served as the ANC’s Treasurer General from 1997 until 2007.
