ANC sets the pace with first voting station results declared

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The African National Congress (ANC) has set the pace as the leading party already with results from the first voting station declared. The first results in the 2019 national and provincial elections are from Mvomvo Lodge, where five people were registered to vote in the Alfred Nzo District. 24 people actually turned up to cast their votes in the national ballot, while 21 people voted for the provincial legislature.

In the national election, the ANC won 11 of those votes, followed closely by the EFF with 8; UDM 2; PAC 2; ASC 1; ATM 1.

Provincially the ANC received 9, again followed closely by EFF with 7; ATM and UDM 2; and PAC 1.

The 2019 national and provincial elections kicked off in various voting stations around the country, bar several which either opened late or failed to open on account of service delivery protests. Most closed by the scheduled 9pm closing time, to begin the counting process.

The Mvomvo Lodge can be found in Ward 8 under the uMzimvubu Municipality (near Mt Ayliff) in the Eastern Cape.

The ward covers 109.7 square kilometres with a population of 6 642, as per the 2011 Census.

In the 2016 Local Government Elections, the ANC comfortably won the ward by 55%, followed by the UDM at 38% and the AIC at 4%.

The population is quite youthful with 28% of the population between 10 and 19, which could be because of migration of young adults after matric to either pursue their studies or look for employment opportunities in urban areas.

Mvomvo Lodge is a 100% women-owned enterprise and was established in 2015. It is only half a kilometer from Ntabankulu and 5km from the well-known Phuthi Junction and lies in the picturesque hilly area popular for hikes and nature trails.
