ANC seeks unity

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The African National Congress (ANC) says it has continued to seek unity after its last elective conference. This is according to the party’s 54th ANC National Elective Conference Organisational Report.

“We have sought to maintain our unity as a leadership collective, even under challenging situations. However, this character of a collective leadership has come under immense strain as a result of factions and slates.”

Leaders of the party have continuously spoken for unity and against factionalism within the organisation.

Leading to the conference, Mpumalanga branches even voted for “unity” as a candidate.

Going into the conference, ANC Treasurer-General Dr Zweli Mkhize said it is the responsibility of all leaders of the ruling party to work together to ensure unity in the organisation.

“At the end of the day, it is the responsibility of each and every one of the leaders of the ANC to collectively work together for the unity of the organisation. After all, because of the campaigns and the debates in the media, it sometimes looks like we are talking about people who are in different organisations. But the crux of the matter is that all the candidates are serving together. They meet every now and again as colleagues and sit in one committee and there is no hostility. So, I think what is important is to try and manage the excitement that is to come inevitably when we have to select leaders, but we all have a responsibility to be united.”
