Pandemonium broke out at the ANC regional conference in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Region in Stilfontein, near Klerksdorp.  This is as some disgruntled members allege that the faction aligned to provincial chairperson Supra Mahumapelo wants to appoint preferred people in strategic positions, by allowing bogus delegates to participate in the conference.  The regional conference of ANC members was preceded by a failed court interdict.

Three ANC regions, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati and Bojanala, apart from Ngaka Modiri Molema are run by task teams.

The  meeting was marred by chaos,  with some saying it won’t happen on their watch.

Some say the processes which was followed to prepare for the conference have been flawed.

Youth league member Sibusiso Kula, “There are 19 branches in the region that gave registered disputes with the PEC. Those disputes have since been reported to the chairperson and he referred all those disputes to the national dispute resolution committee. Up to date those branches have not received responses on their disputes that is why we are saying the conference is not going to happen.”

Branch member Thabang Letsogo says this is a ploy to keep the former Premier of the North-West Supra Mahumapelo in power by continuing to become the chairperson of the party.

“Here in the region we don’t have a regional structure because you have disbanded the regional structure. You have put (Aron) Mostwana and Wendy Nelson to be in an interim structure. Now suddenly because you want to resign as Premier you want to have a political structure behind you. That is madness, we want Supra (Mahumapelo) to go as a chairperson of the ANC. The process must start from scratch.”

Police have had to use hand grenades to disperse warring ANC factions.
