ANC regains the highly contested Makana Local Municipality

The African National Congress (ANC)  has regained the highly contested Makana Local Municipality in Makhanda. The ruling party has been reduced to a one-seat majority in council as it managed to get 14 seats compared to the 17 seats it won in the 2016 elections.

The council is made of 27 seats and the rest was allocated to the opposition. The biggest winners were the newly formed Makana Citizen Front which was contesting the elections for the first time.

The movement, made up of residents, won five seats in council.
