All ANC conferences, including the National General Council, have been postponed until further notice. President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his capacity as party leader, made the announcement after an extended session of the National Working Committee at St George’s Hotel in Irene, Pretoria.

The governing party says this is as the result of the impact of stringent measures introduced by government to combat the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The governing party says the meeting was to discuss government’s response to the spread of the COVID-19 in South Africa.

Briefing the media following the meeting, Ramaphosa said that current structures will be given a three-month extension.

“The NWC has accepted that all those should be suspended from henceforth. Branch general meetings, conferences at regions, provincial level are going to be suspended and those structures that were going to have to hold those manifestations in the form of conferences, because of the time frame that they had been given, all of them will be extended by three months and we will review the situation after the three month period.”

Ramaphosa says the party will use the door-to-door campaign as one of its tools to combat the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. The party will also meet with religious leaders to discuss the approach to the Easter break.
