ANC must do more to restore confidence: Nzimande

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former Higher Education Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande has warned that a reconfiguration of the manner in which the tripartite alliance works is needed if the alliance is to hold.

Speaking to the SABC following a two day meeting last week between the ANC, SACP, COSATU and SANCO, Nzimande says the ANC must do more to restore confidence among its partners.

Nzimande’s axing from cabinet raised tensions within the ANC and its alliance partners.

The SACP declared the move an act of war. The party has been vocal in its call for President Jacob Zuma to resign citing his ties with the controversial Gupta family as the reason why he is no longer fit to run the country.

Nzimande believes this was why he was fired.

“These are not actions of a confident person but rather a very desperate person ,for the reasons that history will hopefully, will reveal sooner rather than later.”

Despite the alliance’s political summit last week, relations among the partners are at their lowest. He says the ball is in the ANCs court to restore confidence.

“These things of the ANC to just run on its own as if it was contesting elections of a president for example who axe, reshuffles cabinet, make some decisions as if he was elected like Barak Obama in the United States as an individual.”

“It’s collective effort to contest elections that must reflect in a manner in which we operate.”

Nzimande’s been lauded for his achievements during his tenure at Higher Education.

“We’ve got three new universities including universities built in the Northern Cape and Mpumalanga. The two provinces that really didn’t have universities we built them pretty quickly and they are growing.”

He was reluctant to be drawn on the highly anticipated Fees Commission report, the contents of which have been leaked.

It was finalised two months ago and is still in President Zuma’s possession.
