Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says the African National Congress’ (ANC) election manifesto has nothing but more empty promises. He was reacting to the manifesto which ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban on Saturday.

Maimane was on a campaign trail in the south of Johannesburg. The DA is set to officially launch its 2019 election manifesto on the 23 of February.

Maimane says unemployment among the youth is one of the critical issues driving the DA’s election campaign. He has urged voters to register ahead of the national poll in May.

“I want to urge all of them to say let’s come out and register on the 26th and 27th. It’s important for them to register to build that one South Africa. It’s about their future. It cannot be that we live in a country where the majority of people who are unemployed are young people. We have the highest unemployment level in the whole world and I think it’s something that must concern us – and the majority of those are young people. This is their time. I  want to get as many of them registered to vote and bring about the change they need.”

However, ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe insists that the manifesto is a high quality statement.

“If you go through the economic section of the economy, we went into details on what we are going to do, starting from the imperative and the pressure for us to create jobs and quality jobs, and what I like about that formulation is that it starts with more jobs – and then it talks about decent jobs. The reality of the matter is that we must get more South Africans to the workplace, then improve the quality of that job.”
