The African National Congress (ANC) in the Northern Cape is confident it will achieve outright wins in many wards in the province.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says more than 70% of the vote has been counted in the province.

Preliminary results indicate that the ANC is currently leading at 46.74% of the provincial vote followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and the newly formed Namakwa Civic Movement.

ANC Provincial Secretary Deshi Ngxanga says they are pleased the ANC is leading across all five districts.

“We basically won most of the wards and then in Namakwa we are doing quite well there, basically in all the sub-regions. There is no pending ward there. In Frances Baard we still have 10 pending here,  in Sol Plaatje and in Phokwane, I  think it is four wards. We are in total control of Sol Plaatje. We are concerned about traditionally white wards; we did not do really well in those areas. It’s a work in progress; we must focus more on service delivery. Pixley ka Seme we are also doing well there.”
