ANC in Limpopo to convene over Lephalale Local Municipality issues

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo says it will soon convene a meeting to discuss the state of affairs in the Lephalale Local Municipality.

This comes after the ANC councillors voted with the Democratic Alliance (DA) against the ANC mayoral candidate.

ANC councillors are divided on the party’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) decision to remove the former mayor Alpheus Thulare and replace him with councillor Aaron Mokgehle.

Thulare also failed in his court bid to stop the ANC from removing him. There was chaos on Thursday when some ANC councillors attempted to disrupt the special council meeting to elect the new mayor.

Police were called to control the situation.

The DA’s Nico Pienaar was elected mayor with nine votes, against the ANC’s Aaron Mokgehle who got seven votes.

“The ANC in Limpopo province of course is very disappointed about the outcomes of Lephalale Municipal Council. Sadly, reports that we’re getting is that now the municipality is under the command of the Democratic Alliance which is something that is contrary to the wishes of voters of Lephalale Municipality. The organisation will of course, meet and reflect on this matter and decide about the next course of action”, says ANC Limpopo spokesperson Jimmy Machaka.
