Reading Time: 3 minutes

The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo says the names of three candidates recommended for the vacant mayoral position in the Polokwane municipality will be forwarded to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) for final determination next week.

The position became vacant last week when Thembi Nkadimeng was appointed Deputy Minister of Co-operative Governance.

Since the position of the Executive Mayor of Polokwane Local Municipality became vacant, two candidates have emerged as front runners to take over the reign. The Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality, John Mpe and the ANC Chief whip in the Polokwane Local Municipality Mamedupi Teffo, are being mentioned as potential candidate to take over 7th floor office.

ANC Spokesperson, Donald Selamolela says they will not reveal the names of recommended candidate to replace Nkadimeng until the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meets on Monday.

“The process to replace her is currently underway.  Polokwane municipality is a municipality,  that the national make a determination then the province will then out of the three names that the region made process them process them and make a recommendation to the National Executive Committee. It is not in position now to explain who are those names. The names are still with the office of the provincial secretary. We would only know of those particular name post the meeting of the provincial executive committee,” says Selamolela.

Political parties represented in the council of the Polokwane Local Municipality have expressed mixed feeling about the pending appointment of the mayor. Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Provincial Secretary, George Raphela says they expect the incoming mayor to improve services.

“We must close that space as soon as possible. The person who is going to come  to replace former Mayor Councillor, Thembi,  he or she should do better than Thembi by providing services unlike what the previous Mayor has done, who has failed Polokwane. We have got a challenge of water. Whoever that they put there it is non of the EFF’s  business. We want the people that can provide services –  that is our interest,

The Democratic Alliance (DA) Provincial Spokesperson, Suzan Phala, says the incoming Executive Mayor must resolve water infrastructure challenges urgently.

“The Democratic Alliance’S  expectations of the incoming Mayor of the Polokwane Local Municipality as the replacement of Thembi Nkadimeng, for him or her must first address the water infrastructure issue and approach National Treasury in order to have enough finances to address whatever infrastructure issue. The unfolding process of election of a new mayor brings about hope to our peopl,” says Phala.

The ANC PEC is expected to discuss candidates to be recommended by the Peter Mokaba region at a meeting to be held next week.
