Zweli Mkhize lodges complaint over voters’ roll exclusion

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal says it has received a dispute from the member of ANC Treasurer-General Dr Zweli Mkhize. This is following their exclusion from a branch general meeting at the weekend.

Dr Mkhize and several members of his family were unable to participate, after their names were allegedly removed from the branch voters roll.

The ANC says it is looking into the matter.

Mkhize is one of the top officials of the oldest liberation movements on the continent, responsible for finances of the party and spends most of his time at the headquarters in Luthuli House.

However, to much surprise, his name and those of his family members no longer appear on the branch list.

Dr Mkhize’s case has become one of many in branches in KwaZulu-Natal. He, his wife Dr May Mashego and other relatives are members of Ward 14 in Willowfontein. However, on arrival at their branch meeting on Sunday they discovered that their names were not on the voters roll.

The Treasurer General, who confirmed the incident, said their names had been there at a previous meeting, prior to the policy conference that was held in June.

“We are dealing with that matter of the TG; a provision will be made. But also, a dispute has been lodged and that will be dealt with by the PWC Committee,” says KwaZulu-Natal ANC Secretary Super Zuma

ANC members from branches have also raised similar complaints, alleging manipulation of the voters’ roll.

Asked if the voters’ roll can be easily tampered with, ANC leaders said it was not possible.

While Dr Mkhize – by virtue of being in the ANC’s top six – will participate at the Elective Conference, his family members will have to await the outcome of the dispute.
