ANC in Free State suspends provincial chief whip Vusi Tshabalala

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State has suspended the party’s provincial chief whip, Vusi Tshabalala, as a member and party leader in the legislature. The ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) has accused Tshabalala of supporting independent candidates and campaigning for rival political parties.

Tshabalala, who was deposed as Maluti-A-Phofung executive mayor in 2018, has accused ANC members of working with the Democratic Alliance (DA) to remove him from his position in the legislature. Tshabalala is a staunch supporter of suspended ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule.

His suspension follows last week’s reshuffle of the provincial cabinet during which former Free State ANC chairperson, Sam Mashinini, was fired as MEC of Police, Roads and Transport. Tshabalala is set to face disciplinary action by the ANC’s provincial disciplinary committee.
