ANC in Eastern Cape to hold elective conference in December

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Africa National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape will hold its elective conference in December. This was announced by Provincial Secretary Lulama Ngcukayithobi during a media briefing at provincial headquarters in Qonce.

The meeting was held following a PEC meeting that took place over the weekend.

The outstanding regional conferences in Nelson Mandela Bay, Amathole, OR Tambo regions among others, will be held before the end of September.

The previous elective conference in 2018 descended into chaos due to infighting within the party. The conference saw Oscar Mabuyane defeat Phumulo Masualle to become the province’s chairperson.

But some disgruntled delegates challenged the outcomes subsequently taking the matter to the courts.

The aggrieved members lost the battle. Secretary Ngcukayithobi says, this time around they want to make sure the conference is incident-free.

“The Provincial Executive Committee term comes to an end before, October 2021, so we are preparing for those, more than 60% of the branches of the ANC in good standing and others also continuing to renew to their terms of office.

So the structures in the African National Congress are in good shape. We’re working towards an incident-free conference of the African National Congress. Who is elected, is a matter that resides for those that are delegated in that particular conference. We are going to be delegates ourselves to go to make our voices in the conference.”

In the video below the Eastern Cape ANC is on a renewal journey, rebuilding the party:

Political Analyst Dr. Nkosikhulule Nyembezi says this decision is an indication of a stable party.

“The timing of the announcement now in August suggest that they will have sufficient time to make all the relevant preparations so as to ensure the conference becomes a success especially in the year in which we are going to be holding elections because the conferences its success suggests that it could also be beneficial in ensuring municipalities also run smoothly. We know that in the Eastern Cape there’s a number of municipalities that are dysfunctional.”

The venue for the conference will be communicated closer to the time.
