ANC in E Cape confident of unity before elective conference

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape is confident it will be united before the highly anticipated party’s National Elective Conference in December. The newly elected Provincial Executive Committee met with its alliance partners and Nelson Mandela Bay Regional Executive Committee in Port Elizabeth. The meeting sought to strengthen relations within the party’s structures. The provincial leadership is currently being challenged in court by members supporting former Chairperson Phumulo Masualle following a chaotic provincial elective conference in East London last month.

“Unity is going to be produced by the process of organisation but we are confident with the work we have done already, we have started, yesterday (Saturday) we met with all the stakeholders. Today (Sunday) we meet with REC (Regional Executive Committee). We are confident in uniting the organisation particularly in this region,” says Provincial Secretary Lulama Ngcukayitobi.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Region says it will only make a decision whether to support the leadership or not after a meeting of the National Executive Committee. “The PEC (Provincial Executive Committee) are the PEC up until further notice on the understanding that there would be an NEC meeting that is on the 11, 12, 13 and therefore that NEC meeting will either endorse or nullify that is the conference of the ANC and all the branches of the ANC in this region, we are just following that instructions,” says Acting Regional Chairperson, Phumzile Tshuni.
