The IFP is the official opposition in KwaZulu-Natal. Hlabisa says one of the party’s key priorities is to ensure that they root out corruption. IFP president emeritus Mangosuthu Buthelezi also addressed supporters.

“As the founder of the IFP, I know the character and the legacy of this party. I know how hard we have worked for 46 years to serve the people of South Africa and to secure social and economic injustice for all. I know that we have done it hand in hand with you building strong partnerships that have lasted because they are built on trust. Working together with you, the IFP has strengthened democracy in our country and social cohesion. We are the party you can trust,” says Buthelezi.

The IFP is confident it will make inroads in the eThekwini Metro in the municipal elections on Monday. The party is contesting elections in 106 wards in eThekwini. Speaking on the sidelines of the party’s main closing rally, IFP treasurer-general Naren Singh says they were warmly welcomed in many areas.

“There’s been a lot of interest from people in Durban. I think we are going to surprise people, particularly in the eThekwini area. In areas like Chatsworth and Phoenix we looking to really make a serious dent in those communities after what happened during the unrest and the leadership role that Prince Buthelezi played to calm things down, to unite communities and this is something that we have been preaching all along. I think communities are beginning to see us now as a unifying force and not a force to divide the communities and divide people according to race, religion, or and another cultural area,” says Singh.
