ANC forced Zuma to change finance minister: Analyst

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Political analyst Steven Friedman says it is now clear that people in the African National Congress forced President Jacob Zuma to make drastic changes in the Finance Department last year.

Friedman’s statement comes after President Zuma said David van Rooyen was more qualified than any minister he has ever appointed in the department.

The rand weakened to record levels after van Rooyen’s appointment as Finance minister.

President Zuma then re-appointed Pravin Gordhan to head the department.

Speaking on AM Live, Friedman says good ministers need more than academic qualifications.

“If the ministers he appoints do not enjoy the trust of important groups of South Africa, then they will resist your decision and force you to change it. He is acknowledging that he didn’t want to make that decision and he was forced to make that decision.”
