ANC denounces abuse of party processes for personal gain

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The African National Congress (ANC) says abuse of party processes for personal gain will be looked into as it prepares for its June National Policy conference.

The party launched its discussion documents on Sunday in Johannesburg.

The party has asked members to put an end to corruption, which it says could leave to the ANC’s demise.

Head of policy in the ANC Jeff Radebe says the decline in numbers calls for urgent intervention.

“The ANC is increasingly losing the trust of the people, as illustrated by the declining electoral processes and intense public criticism. The organisation must act urgently to win back the trust of the people to ensure that the ANC is structured optimally to remain the leader of the motive forces for change.”

The document puts forward a number of interventions aimed at stemming the party’s electoral decline and winning back the confidence of the public. ANC Head of Policy Jeff Radebe outlines some of the other proposals.

The ANC is also proposing that the Presidency be strengthened to enable it to drive the National Development Plan as well as resource allocation and implementation. Radebe says the rationale behind the proposal will not hamper the functions of other planning already in existence.

“What is being said there is to increase capacity because the issue of planning is of critical importance.”

The ANC says it plans to find ways on improving systems used to reach beneficiaries of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Education and Health, Naledi Pandor, says too often beneficiaries want to come forward and pay, but don’t know how.

The ANC has identified access to finance as one of the key challenges facing radical economic transformation in the country. Head of the party’s Sub-Committee for Economic Transformation, Enoch Godongwana, raised the issue. The document dealing with Economic Transformation proposes measures to reduce unemployment, increase black ownership and control of the economy and return land to the people. Godongwana says access to finance is an issue that society must confront head on.

“Both for Small and Medium enterprise I want to put that and for black economic empowerment in general if we want to make this radical transformation and transfer assets to black people there must be money available for these changes that are …Unfortunately black people have been deprived of assets so they have nothing to utilise to transform so someone has to step up to the place who that is I don’t know it is a matter for discussion Small and medium enterprise if they don’t have access to finance we are dreaming.”

Over the next few weeks, the ruling party is expected to discuss and break down the proposals of each sub-committee And then this will be taken to the National Policy Conference on the 30th of June.
