ANC delegates support proposal on Free State members

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The majority of African National Congress (ANC) delegates have agreed to support a proposal to endorse the resolution by the party’s top brass that delegates from the Free State be allowed to have full participation rights to the conference.
The motion was presented by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) member, Jeff Radebe.
Last week, the Constitutional Court annulled the election of the Free State Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) led by Premier, Ace Magashule.
The ruling forced the ANC to disband the provincial executive, and ban 19 of its members from the conference.
Delegates have also voted overwhelmingly for the ratification of a motion to have North-West delegates participate in the conference.
This follows the threat by the disgruntled faction of the North-West to approach the courts to force the ANC leadership to ban provincial delegates from participating in the conference.
Meanwhile, African National Congress (ANC) Western Cape chairperson, Marius Fransman, says he has declined nomination for the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to focus on dislodging the Democratic Alliance (DA) from power in the province.
The party says it wants to regain control in 2014.
Building an effective opposition also has not been quite easy for the reportedly divided ANC, in the Western Cape. It is the only province where the party finds itself on the opposition benches.
The ANC’s provincial nomination process collapsed twice ahead of the Mangaung conference, but finally Deputy President, Kgalema Motlanthe, was chosen as the nominee for party President.
Fransman says he wants to focus on unifying and rebuilding the ANC.
