Political analyst Tinyiko Maluleke says it is evident that the African National Congress (ANC) is deeply divided over who should take over from Supra Mahumapelo as North West premier.

The party earlier said its National Executive Committee (NEC) had resolved to further engage and consult on the issue.

The position became vacant following the resignation of Mahumapelo last week. His resignation followed weeks of violent protests in the North West against his continued stay in office.

The Provincial Executive Committee presented three names to the NEC at the weekend.

Speaking on SAfm Maluleke says there are serious disagreements on how to resolve the North West issue.

“The factions are continuing and the influence of the PEC and Supra on the NEC is still very strong. The North West issue is symptomatic of a greater series of problems in the provinces and the regions. This is really the debt that the Cyril Ramaphosa team has, to fix the problems within the party in time for the elections if they are not going to suffer some punishment from the voters.”
