ANC, DA at loggerheads over Madikizela-Mandela legacy

The ANC in the Western Cape has accused the DA of trying to dishonour the memory of struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

This comes after the party requested a debate in the provincial legislature on her legacy.

ANC Member of the Provincial Legislature, Khaya Magaxa says the DA‘s alleged refusal to debate Madikizela-Mandela’s role in the struggle is worrying.

“It’s a positive debate that’s not necessarily intended to be political but more of a tribute celebrating the life and times and the contribution Winnie Mandela made in our struggle which culminated to the current democratic dispensation but to our dismay DA speaker responded in one sentence dismissing our request.”

DA Chief Whip, Mark Wiley has denied the ANC’s allegations.

The DA both federally and provincially has issued statements of condolences and support of Mrs Mandela’s feat as a liberation fighter on hand and secondly we have, at the very first opportunity, we have agreed to have statements issued by the various political parties in parliament tomorrow.”
