African National Congress (ANC) councillors in the Modimolle-Mookgophong municipality in Limpopo, have accused an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor, of allegedly accruing personal benefits from municipal land.

ANC councillor, Rufus Mogoro, alleges that his EFF counterpart, William Monyela, has been leasing the municipal land to livestock farmers and pocketed the money.

The land in question was bought by the municipality from a previous owner at about R1.2 million in September this year.

The piece of 20 000 hectares has been earmarked for a landfill site and a cemetery.

Mogoro says they want the matter tabled in the municipal council.

“We took a council resolution to purchase this land for the development of the new landfill and cemetery only in July 2020. The municipality paid for this land in September 2021 the land is not registered in the name of the municipality yet,” explains Mogoro.

Meanwhile, EFF chairperson in Limpopo, Jossey Buthane, has however disputed the allegations against the party councillor.

Buthane says their councillor had been leasing the land from the previous owner before it was bought by the municipality.

“The allegations against our councillor, William Monyela, are unfounded and not true. They are just a political ploy by the ANC mayoral candidate. They wanted to bring the matter to the council. The farmer has confirmed that the municipality completed the transfer of the farm in November this year, but already our councillor was already out of that farm,”  says Buthane.
