African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe says the 54th National Conference of the ANC will take place as planned.

Speaking at the Northern Cape Provincial General Council in Upington, he warned those who will try to interdict the conference in court saying they are ready to fight them.

Mantashe warned delegates against vote buying – in favour of certain candidates. He cautioned candidates that will be elected at the December conference not to purge anyone after the conference. He says any tensions that will arise after the conference will not be good for the ANC.

“Even when President Thabo Mbeki was recalled and cabinet ministers said they are leaving, we went to each and every one of them and said no, remain in your post. Eight of them, cabinet ministers and deputy ministers left voluntarily. When there is anger, when there are tensions, it is very easy to commit mistakes; purging, bad sabotaging an elected team is terrible.”
